Specific entry requirements

At least 120 credit points within which it should be included a nurse degree and a completed specialist education within health care for child and youth or within district healthcare or two years professional or vocational experience from paediatrics (is confirmed with service certificates). Furthermore, knowledge in Swedish B is required and English A (with at least the Pass grade). Or ongoing studies on Study programme in specialist nursing with a specialisation in health care for child and youth or district healthcare at Karolinska Institutet.

Objectives

The general aims of the course are that the student should be able to apply and integrate knowledge in preventive and health promotion work within child health on completion of the course.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
- analyse and explain symptom and treatment at children within the child health,
- identify and analyse nursing needs at work from the child health BAS program,
- show knowledge and understanding about improvement -, development - and current research within the child health.

Skills and abilities
- show ability to notice and meet needs of learning among children family/close, and representatives for other occupational groups and activities,
- show ability to integrate the nursing process and family-oriented care in child health work by analysing assess argue too and handle complex phenomena, issues and situations also with restricted information,
- show ability to prioritise initiate, carry out investigation and follow up considering developmental stage, family situation, cultural background and gender,
- demonstrate scientific precision in analysis and written text.

Judgement and approach
- analyse and reflect around relevant scholarship, best practice and an ethical attitude, see its relationship and importance for the nurse practitioner within the child health,
- show deeper understanding about laws, ordinances and national and local regulations that apply within the child health.

Content

In the course, preventive concepts based on family-focused nursing within the family and child healthcare are studied. The course deals with the rights, resources and need in different developmental stages of children and living environments with the perspectives of the child as starting point, related to scholarship and research within the child health.

Also the prevention importance in the area be studied. Theories and models for communication and teaching be processed. The course also deals with cross-professional and cross-sectoral cooperation, current laws, ordinances and safety precautions and its application. In the course is observed both a diversity perspective and ethical issues. Further, leadership within the child health is treated.

Teaching methods

The course is carried out as distance education with learning management system (PingPong) as basis. The course is based on a problem-oriented and student-activating view on the learning. Different working methods such as individual study assignments, discussions and seminars and lectures occur.

In-service training days with lectures/seminar is compulsory parts that occur in the course these are stated on the timetable or in the study guide. Compulsory study assignments and discussions are included, these should be carried out before the implementation of the final examination. In case of absence from compulsory parts, turn to course director.

Examination

The course contains a final examination. It is carried out as an individual written submission based on patient cases.

Student who has not passed after regular examination session has the right to participate at further five examination sessions. If the student has carried out six failed examinations/tests no more examination session will be given.
As examination session, the times are counted the student participated in an and the same tests. Examination session to which the student has registered but not participated in will not be counted as an examination session.

Transitional provisions

Examination will be provided during a time of two years after a possible close-down of the course. Examination can be according to an earlier literature list during a time of one year after the date when a renewal of the literature list been made.

Other directives

The course evaluation takes place according to guidelines established by the Board of education.
