Specific entry requirements

Bachelor's degree or vocational degree worth at least 180 higher education credits. Proficiency in the English language documented by an internationally recognized test such as TOEFL with a total score of at least 79 (internet based), 550 (paper based), 213 (computer based), IELTS with a total score of at least 6,0 (no band less than 5,0), or other documentation that certifies English language skills equivalent to English B at Swedish upper secondary school.

Objectives

After completion of the course the student should be able to: - Analyse health care systems in low- and middle income countries (LMIC). - Understand health planning processes in LMIC including human resource planning. - Describe and explain management and leadership models in health care and be able to use them analytically. - Apply some basic concepts and tools in health economics. - Describe basic health care financing models and apply them in analysis. - Describe the Swedish health care system and relate it to general issues around health care systems.

Content

- Introduction to management, planning and leadership. - Policy-making, planning and capacity building in LMIC. - Leadership and governance. - Change management and practical applications in LMIC. - Health care financing. - Basic principles of health economics. - Presentation and application of cost-effectiveness analysis. - Presentation of basic issues and methods for monitoring and evaluation.

Teaching methods

Teaching will be in the form of interactive lectures and group assignments.

Examination

- Written examination. - Written report and oral presentation of group work. The final grade Pass on the course requires Pass on the written exam, the writing group task and the oral presentation. The final grade Pass with distinction on the course also requires Pass with distinction on the written exam and at least one of the other examinations. Limitation of number of occasions to write the exam The student has the right to write the exam six times. If the student has not passed the exam after four participations he/she is encouraged to visit the study advisor. The number of times that the student has participated in one and the same examination is regarded as an examination session. Submission of a blank examination is regarded as an examination. An examination for which the student registered but not participated in will not be counted as an examination.

Transitional provisions

After each course occasion there will be at least six occasions for the examination within a 2-year period from the end of the course.

Other directives

Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education. A meeting (kursråd) will be held with the course leader och students representatives. The course language is English.
