Specific entry requirements

General eligibility requirements for university studies.

Specific eligibility requirements
The student should have:

  • a very good command of English or a very good command of Swedish
  • at least 2 years of study at a study programme in Occupational Therapy

Objectives

The aim of the course is for the student to develop a professional occupational therapy identity merging both new and already acquired occupational therapy knowledge with international perspectives in a clinical learning environment.

Learning objectives

In the clinical rotation the student shall under supervision progress towards independence showing capacity to:

  • Understand and apply occupational therapy processes grounded in theory during the clinical rotation.
  • Assess and analyse clients' occupational performance.
  • Define occupation based and health promoting goals in collaboration with the clients.
  • Plan, carry out and evaluate relevant occupational therapy interventions.
  • Reflect on ethical choices when working with clients, their relatives/family and co-workers.
  • Demonstrate an appropriate approach in the process towards establishing a professional identity. This shall be illustrated through good communication and active engagement when working with the patient as well as with other relevant health-professionals.
  • Reflect, in various ways, upon differences and similarities in the work of the occupational therapist in Sweden as compared to the work of the occupational therapist in the home country as well as in relation to global health.

Content

The course consists of clinical education in a municipal and/or hospital based occupational therapy setting. It comprises of compulsory 32 study hours per week in a setting that has an agreement with the occupational therapy programme. The remaining 8 hours per week are allocated for literature studies and preparations. The student will engage in clinical and learning activities under the supervision of licensed occupational therapists as well as from other health care professions.

Teaching methods

The teaching is based on a problem-oriented and collaborative approach to learning in which the tasks provide opportunities for the student to take active responsibility for the learning.

Examination

The student will work on the learning objectives, these are what the student will be assessed upon. The supervisor will assess the students' progress in relation to the learning objectives during the clinical education and the examiner at the occupational therapy programme decides the final grade based on the supervisor's assessment. The grading scale used is Pass/Fail, this can be converted into another scale (f e A-F) should it be required by the partner university.

The examiner decides whether, and if so how, absence from compulsory course elements can be compensated.
The examiner may, with immediate effect, interrupt a student's clinical placement (or equivalent) if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. If a clinical placement is interrupted in this way the student is deemed to have failed that element and to have used up one clinical placement opportunity. In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up and communicated with the partner university.

If there are special grounds, or a need for adaptation for a student with a disability, the examiner may decide to deviate from the syllabus's regulations on the examination form, the number of examination opportunities, the possibility of supplementation or exemptions from the compulsory section/s of the
course etc. Content and learning outcomes as well as the level of expected skills, knowledge and abilities may not be changed, removed or reduced.

Other directives

The course will be evaluated in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
